John Pike was one of three or four individuals who stood as technical mentor in my life. To me, one of the signs of a true scholar is clarity in thinking and communication. His ability to translate complex material into understandable components which were mentally accessible by all was amazing. His creativity was a light that lit the paths for many. His eclectic mind was tuned to simplicity and practicality. Wherever John mentally or physically ventured, in the sciences, the serenity and beauty of nature, teaching and mentorship, or helping those in need, he wove a path of enthusiasm, ethics, assistance and knowledge. John was a humanist. He served elegantly the social and scientific needs of society. John was a well versed pioneer who was able to see the roads of the future. John realized that like Nature in her simplicity, his mind in its simplicity could rally a pervasive force that was kind and awe- inspiring. John’s thoughts written or spoken, emulated from his mind as a fresh breeze. John led by example as a judicious, thoughtful and brilliant sage.
I have known John since I was first hired out of college by Union Carbide (1974). My wife Caren and I greatly admired he and his wife Margaretta. We give our deep condolences to John’s family. John will be gracefully archived in the minds of hundreds. He is missed and he will always be remembered.
