Obituary for Grace M. Rooke (Murphy)

Grace M. Rooke (Murphy)
Grace Murphy Rooke, 95, formerly of Pleasantville, NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 23, 2014.

Grace was predeceased by her husband, Vernon W. Rooke Jr., to whom she was married for 41 years and by her great granddaughter, Fiona Grace Dolan.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Vernon W. Rooke III, and his wife, Lesley; her two granddaughters, Stacy Biggs and Dana Dolan (Mike); and great granddaughter, Claire Dolan.

Born in New Haven, Grace grew up in Newtown, CT before moving to Washington, DC to work as a secretary in the Pentagon during World War II. After the war, she moved to New York City, where she became the personal secretary to playwright Robert Sherwood.

After moving to Pleasantville, Grace became very active in many organizations, including the Pleasantville Women's Club and the Contemporary Club. She loved to play bridge, was part of a bowling league, and she also played golf. She spent many happy hours sewing, and as she got older was always knitting, often to donate to good causes. She loved to travel and took many great trips, including cruises on the QE II, to Alaska and to the Caribbean. She also traveled to Ireland several times to enjoy her heritage and search her ancestry. For as long as possible, she was an active member of the Mt. Kisco United Methodist Church and enjoyed working on rummage sales and singing in the choir.

Her quick sense of humor and good nature will be missed by many.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, April 28 at the Beecher-Flooks Funeral Home at 418 Bedford Road in Pleasantville from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. A funeral service will take place at Beecher-Flooks on Tuesday, April 29 at 10:00 AM with visiting from 9:00 AM -10:00 PM. Interment will follow at the Newtown Cemetery in Newtown, CT.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Grace's memory to the Mt. Kisco United Methodist Church, 300 East Main Street, Mt. Kisco, NY 10549.
