Obituary for Jeanne E. Merlino (Kottner)

Jeanne Merlino passed away on September 30, 2014. She was 86 years old. Jeanne was born on May 10, 1928 in Queens, New York to Bela and Charlotte Kottner. She graduated from Queens College in 1949. She earned a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from the Belfer Graduate School of Science of Yeshiva University in 1971, and taught seventh grade math in the Chappaqua Central School district for most of her career. After she retired, she became a travel consultant at Chappaqua Travel, and was able to combine her meticulous attention to detail with her love of adventure -- planning trips for others and circling the globe many times over herself. In her later years, she enjoyed knitting at the Pleasantville Senior Center and doing crossword puzzles. Jeanne was predeceased by her one and only love, her husband Anthony Merlino, whom she married in 1949. She was also predeceased by her sister, Elinor Santoro and her brother, Raymond Kottner. She is survived by her daughter Maria (John) Sullivan, and her grandson, Ethan Menegakis. She is also survived by her son, Frank (Mindy) Merlino, and grandchildren Max Anthony and Kimber Jeanne. Friends and family will gather on Friday, October 3, 2014 between 8:30 and 10:30 am at Beecher Flooks Funeral Home, 418 Bedford Road, Pleasantville. 914-769-0001. A Mmass of Christian burial will follow at 11:00 at Holy Innocents Roman Catholic Church, 431 Bedford Road, Pleasantville. Internment will take place afterwards at Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale, New York. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation, www.curepc.org.
