Richard Alan Cowan, Sr.

March 26, 1937 - November 1, 2014

Richard “Dick” Alan Cowan, Sr., of Mahopac, NY, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on November 1, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellis, his sister Alice Jester (Taylor) of Greenport, NY; and his three children: Richard Cowan, Jr. (Joanne), of Cassadaga, NY; Janet Cowan (Mark Haber) of San Francisco, CA; and Robert Cowan (Lela Nargi) of Brooklyn, NY; as well as three stepchildren: Ross Alvord (Bébhinn) of Brewster, NY; William Fleming of London, England; and Katherine Fleming of Brooklyn, NY; and seven grandchildren: Timothy and Margaret Cowan; Ada Cowan; Nuala and Donovan Alvord; and Saoirse and Richard Hoffman.

Dick Cowan was born on March 26th, 1937 in Hackensack, NJ, and grew up in East Marion, NY, at the end of the North Fork of Long Island. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1960 with a degree in philosophy and went on to an over 30-year career as a school teacher in Central Islip, NY, Pathogue, NY, and Chappaqua, NY. Mr. Cowan specialized in 4th and 6th grades and developed science and social studies curricula for New York State for many years.

In his retirement, Mr. Cowan was an accomplished woodworker and served as an historian, teacher, and director at the Century Museum Village at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds. A talented furniture-maker, he created Windsor chairs for his family. He was a skilled carver, who authored articles and books on Long Island decoys—a lifelong passion—and devoted time to duck-hunting and wetlands conservation. He was an avid birdwatcher and an active and enthusiastic member of the Audubon Society. His kindness and generosity influenced everyone he met.

A wake will be held from 7 to 9pm on Wednesday, November 5th and from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm on Thursday, November 6th at Beecher-Flooks Funeral Home at 418 Bedford Road in Pleasantville, NY. Donations in honor of Dick Cowan’s love and many contributions to education, birds, and local history may be made to the any of these organizations.
