Obituary for Hugo M. van Perlstein

Hugo Morits van Perlstein passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2015. He was born in Arnhem, The Netherlands on April 9, 1920. The only child of Philip van Perlstein and Rosa van Perlstein-Gompertz, who both died in Auschwitz in September 1943.
Hugo escaped from The Netherlands during WWII. His flight was through Belgium and France to reach Switzerland where he attended business school in Lausanne. After a year he left to go through France, Spain and finally Gibraltar where he went by boat to England, There he joined the Dutch division of the British Royal Airfare.
When the war was over he returned to Amsterdam and worked there for five years. He decided to go to the USA. He landed in Brooklyn by boat where he met Mrs de Kadt, who also was born in Arnhem. He married her daughter, Mathilde in 1955. They lived in an apartment in Hartsdale for three years. Then they moved to Pleasantville, NY when Hugo got a job at the Reader’s Digest in computers. He retired after 25 years to make time for his hobbies: gardening, biking, skiing, building furniture, stamp collecting, making photos and films. He was a dedicated Rotarian and served in many capacities. He also attended Columbia at night.
He was a good father for his two daughters, Monique and Michelle and a wonderful husband for his wife Til. We and his relatives in Holland will all miss him very much. The family will receive friends at Beecher Flooks Funeral Home in Pleasantville on Thursday January 15 from 10 AM – Noon. The Funeral Service will start promptly at Noon. Burial will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery. In lieu of flowers kindly make donations in Hugo’s name to the Pleasantville Rotary Foundation P.O.
