Obituary for Leonard A. "Lenny" Shon Jr.

Leonard A. Shon, Jr.
A huge loss to the Pleasantville community was suffered on Wednesday, January 21, with the untimely passing of Leonard (“Lenny”) Shon, following a courageous battle against cancer. Lenny, a Pleasantville native and resident his entire life, was born on June 22, 1955. He was a too-young 59 at the time of his passing, and faced life with a smile, a kind word and a firm handshake for everyone he met, right up until the end. Of Lenny, a kind and gentle man who loved life, it can truly be said he had no enemies, only friends. He was known for many accomplishments in his life, which included being “The Fastest Man in Westchester”, a testament to his athletic prowess. A lifelong New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys fan, Lenny was the consummate sports fanatic. During his high school years he was an integral part of the Pleasantville Panthers Football Team when it posted a 35 game winning streak and became the #1 high school football team in New York State. Lenny dearly loved Pleasantville, a fact reflected in his commitment to community service. A 23-year veteran of the Pleasantville Volunteer Fire Department, he proudly served as an officer for 6 years in Pioneer Engine Company No. 1, attaining the rank of Captain. He most recently filled the critical role of Departmental Safety Officer, looking out for the health, safety and welfare of Pleasantville’s bravest men and women. Lenny was an ambassador for the PVFD, and indeed for all volunteer fire departments. He led by quiet example and always with a sense of humor, no matter the circumstances. He never lost this admirable quality, even as the serious of his illness became increasingly apparent. Lenny enjoyed being with people and making new friends, and will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was predeceased by his mother Leona, whom Lenny dearly loved and took great care of; his father Leonard, Sr.; sister Arlene and brother Robert. A gathering of his many friends and acquaintances will be held on Friday, January 23, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and again from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at Beecher-Flooks Funeral Home, Pleasantville where his funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 24. In lieu of flowers please consider making a contribution to the American Brain Tumor Association in Leonard’s name.
