Barbara S. Bailey passed away peacefully on January 21, 2016, age 91. A lifelong resident of Pleasantville, NY, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, James D Bailey, and almost all the other family members of her generation. She and Jim were married on December 27, 1947, in the midst of one of the biggest blizzards in the history of the New York area. She is survived by her children, Donald A. Bailey of Seattle WA, Sandra B. Hibbard of Pleasantville, and Marianne Bailey of Alexandria VA; five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Barbara was born in Enfield CT to Scottish immigrant parents, William and Catherine Shields. She graduated from Hastings High School. Barbara was very proud of her Scottish heritage, and visited Scotland several times, as a child and as an adult. She worked for many years at the Chappaqua Library, and volunteered her time to the Twigs of Northern Westchester Hospital, the Pleasantville Women’s Club, and Pleasantville Presbyterian Church. She was a dedicated bridge player, and continued to play until disabled by a stroke in 2013. Universally kind and considerate, content and unassuming, she never spoke a word in anger, except occasionally in defense of a mischievous child. Her family wishes to thank the staff of The Country House in Westchester for their care of Barbara the past two years. A Memorial Service is planned for February 13, 2016 at 1:00 PM at the Pleasantville Presbyterian Church.
