Obituary for Bridget F. Healy (Finegan)

Brigid F. Healy

8/16/1920 – 4/29/2016

Brigid Healy, a resident of Thornwood since 1978, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2016 at age 95 after receiving the last rites of the Catholic Church. She was born in County Kildare, Ireland to Thomas and Ellen Finegan and grew up in County Meath. In 1929, Ellen and the six children joined Tom who had emigrated to the U.S. the year before. Brigid’s only sister was born the next year in the U.S. Although only nine when she immigrated, Brigid never lost her charming brogue and love of Ireland. In 1938, she graduated with honors from Cathedral High School in NYC and married her beloved husband, the late John J. Healy, in 1939. Always an outstanding student, she was able to earn a BS from Hunter College in 1954 while raising her four sons. She celebrated by having her only daughter the following March and started a 27 year career of teaching in the NYC school system the following September. Not finished with formal education but continuing to teach in the South Bronx and to raise her children, she completed an MS in Teaching the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at Hunter (NYC) and became a visiting special education/resource room teacher for the hard of hearing.

Brigid was first and foremost a devoted mother and wife. She secured her degree to help to pay for her children’s education and to afford vacations. Then, while still in college, she learned to drive so that she could take the family on trips.

Upon retirement she continued to learn and to meet new people by taking trips all over the world, visiting all five continents and experiencing multiple cultures. Once she became a veteran traveler, she took grandchildren along to help them broaden their horizons.

Brigid was an active communicant and lector in Holy Innocents Church until she became homebound. She eagerly shared her strong faith with friends and family.

Brigid Healy is survived by two siblings: Francis Finegan (Commack, NY) and Helen Trainor (Toms River, NJ); three children: Charles (Margaret) of Los Angeles, Thomas (Mary) of Flanders, NJ and Brea (William) Doyle of Thornwood; one daughter-in-law Anita (John, deceased) of Charlestown, RI; and 12 grandchildren: Craig, Theresa, John, David, Elaine, Colleen, Jenine, Danielle, Eileen, Maureen, William, and Sean. So far there are nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sons, John and William, and siblings Patrick, Thomas, Anthony, and Desmond Finegan.

The family is very grateful to the most recent dedicated caregivers Novlette, Sanchia, Carol, and Yvonne for assisting Brea Doyle to enable our mother to live comfortably in her own home until she passed away.

Visitation will be at Beecher-Flooks Funeral Home, Inc., 418 Bedford Rd., Pleasantville, NY on Thursday, May 5 from 4 to 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Brigid Healy’s life will be held on Friday, May 6 at 11AM at Holy Innocents Church, located at 431 Bedford Rd., Pleasantville, NY. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY.
