Obituary for Robert D. Ross

Robert D.  Ross
Robert D. Ross, 94, of Chappaqua, NY passed away October 5, 2016 at his Mount Kisco home. He was born November 22, 1921, in Pittsburg, PA to Charles and Sylvia (Turets) Ross.

As a boy, Robert participated in the Boy Scouts achieving the honor of Eagle Scout. Upon graduating high school, he worked at the New York World’s Fair. After attending Fenn College’s coop engineering program in Cleveland, Robert served as a meteorologist in US Air Core with the officer rank of 1st Lieutenant. He received his BSEE in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Rutgers University in 1946 and was accepted Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society. Robert worked on many interesting engineering projects such as torpedo guidance systems for companies like GE, Gianinni Controls Corp and others eventually starting his own company selling airplane components to aircraft manufacturers.

After closing his business, he become a math teacher and guidance counselor at Alfred E. Smith High School in the Bronx for 22 years retiring in 1992. He stayed active in the community tutoring students in math, leading bi-weekly hikes with the ADK for over 10 years, practicing yoga daily, participating in Torah Study weekly at Temple Beth El in Chappaqua, serving as board president of his Coop building in Mount Kisco, and Treasurer for the Chappaqua Chapter of the Rotary Club. Robert was also the most dedicate and compassionate of caregivers to his wife Mary for 12 years and his daughter Teresa for over 35 years into his 90’s.

A lifelong democrat, intellect and champion of the underdog, he is remembered by friends and family as a brilliant, strong, energetic, compassionate and inspiring man with a great sense of humor who always made time to be of service to others and be leader when needed.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife Mary (Ryan) Ross and daughter Teresa Ross. He is survived by his son, Marc Ross of Duxbury, MA, his nephews Melvin & Michael Melnick, his brother in-laws Joe Ryan, Kevin Drury and their families.

A funeral service will be held at Temple Beth El of Northern Westchester in Chappaqua, NY on Sunday, October 9th, 2016 at 10am followed by burial at Sharon Gardens in Valhalla.
