Obituary for John V. McCarthy

John "Mac" McCarthy, 77, passed away at his home in NYC on February 21, 2017. He served in the US Army from 1958-60. He was honorably discharged. He then joined the FDNY in 1962 serving 25+ years in Ladder 49, Bronx, NY
He was a proud member of the New York City Fire Department Pipes and Drums. He was a snare drummer for over 20 years. He loved playing the drums and passed that tradition along to his son John. He loved music and had a special fondness for Dixieland Jazz. He loved woodworking and spent much of his time sharing this hobby with his friends and family. He retired from the FDNY in the early 90's due to injuries suffered in the line of duty. He spent the rest of years living in NYC, a place he loved. He always had a smile on his face especially during visits with his grandchildren. He is survived by his son John (Amy) McCarthy, grandchildren Connor and Haley McCarthy, sister Joan (Rocco) Suozzo, brothers James (Susan) McCarthy and Edward (Helen) McCarthy, numerous nieces and nephews who loved him very much. He also leaves behind long time companion Elisa Nave who he spent much of his later life with.
The family will receive friends and family on Friday, February 24 from 2-4 and 7-9, Beecher Flooks Funeral Home, 418 Bedford Rd., Pleasantville, NY 10570. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 25, 2017, Holy Innocents Church, 431 Bedford Rd., Pleasantville, NY 10570
