Obituary for James A. Passabet Sr.

James A. Passabet Sr, 85 a lifetime resident of Hawthorne, NY passed away on March 23 surrounded by his adoring family. James was born on August 28, 1931 in White Plains to Joseph Vincent Passabet and Lucille Frey Passabet.
He attended Mt. Pleasant elementary schools and graduated from Pleasantville High School in 1949 where he played his beloved baseball for the Panthers and met his future bride Genevieve Conte. He went on to graduate from Iona College with a history degree and received his teaching certification from Hunter College.
He proudly served his country in the Army from 1955-1961 as a control tower operator and high speed radio operator.
In June 1959 he married Genevieve at the original Holy Rosary Church in Hawthorne. They settled into their home on Muller Place to raise their three wonderful children.
Jim started his teaching career in Portchester and then moved on to the newly founded Westlake school district as an original staff member and so started his legacy as everyones "favorite teacher" and baseball coach. In 1967 he was named Westchester Coach of the Year. This was the beginning of his ever growing fan base . He was loved and respected by many and you could not go many places in the Mt. Pleasant area where he was not known. During his tenure as a teacher he also worked for the Mt. Pleasant Recreation Department, where he was a dedicated employee up to his death.
Jim loved his baseball years with the Armonk Legion and his softball years with Waljos and Stotz teams. Many beloved friendships from those days have endured through the years. His baseball knowledge and stories were boundless.
Jim had five grandchildren: Donny Madera, Matthew Madera, James Passabet III, Christopher Madera and Kathleen Passabet. To say they were the light of his life would be a gross understatement. He spent many enjoyable hours traveling to watch their sporting endeavors and anything else they did.
He was a huge fan of traveling and staying in hotels, not to mention collecting toiletries. He enjoyed his many vacations through his life, culminating with his most recent summers in Cape Cod, where he enjoyed relaxing with family, doing his ever present crosswords and taking care of his favorite birds.
Jim is survived by his loving children; Cathy (Don) Madera, James (Cecelia) Passabet Jr., his daughter in law, Erin Passabet, his five beloved grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Genevieve and his son Richard. The family will receive friends at the Beecher Flooks Funeral Home in Pleasantville on Sunday from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM & Monday from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:00 AM at Holy Rosary R.C. Church in Hawthorne. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers PO Box 302, Maryknoll, NY 10545. An organization close to his heart as this is where he got his name, from Father James Anthony Walsh, a founding father of the Maryknoll Mission.
