Armonk - Richard H. Scholer, 81, died Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at
NY Presbyterian Hospital in New York, NY.
He leaves his wife of 51 years, Susan Scholer, three daughters, Sandra
(Mark Messina), Patty (Brian McMahon), and Kristine (Robert Tillman).
He also leaves behind six grandsons, Matthew (18), Jack (16), Kevin
(16), and Brian Jr. (13) McMahon, Max Messina (12), and Jesse Tillman
(2). He is also survived by his sister, Janet Hampe, and many close
friends.
Born in Harlem, NY to Herman and Isabel Scholer, he grew up in
Queens, NY where he graduated from Newtown High School and
continued on to Colorado A&M. He received his bachelor’s degree
from Mercy College and later went on to get his master’s degree from
Long Island University.
After college, he followed a tour in the Army with an appointment to
the NY State Police. He proudly served in NYC and Albany as a
detective on the Organized Crime Task force. During his career, he
worked undercover narcotics, drove an undercover taxi, and installed
wiretaps. One of his more memorable experiences was working
undercover at Woodstock in 1969. After retiring from the State Police
as a Senior Investigator, in 1983 he and his wife opened a family
printing business, Park Lane Graphics Inc. where he continued to work
until he passed away.
Richard was an avid fisherman with a passion for the sea. He had his
Captain’s License, spent time as a commercial fisherman, and loved
spending his summers at his home in Hampton Bays, fishing, clamming
and enjoying his family and friends. Often found tinkering in his garage
or working around his homes, he had a reputation for being able to fix
anything. In his later years, he developed a passion for writing,
submitting humorous letters to the Vero Beach newspaper and
authoring nine published books.
A wake will be held at Beecher Flooks Funeral Home, 418 Bedford Road, Pleasantville, NY on Friday, November 17 from 4pm - 8pm, where memorial service will be held 11am on Saturday, November 18. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donationto the American Heart Association.
