Obituary for Janet S. Postel (Smith)

Janet Barbara Smith Postel, 80, of Montrose, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2017, after a 27 year battle with breast cancer.
Janet Barbara Smith was born on April 1, 1936 in Brooklyn, New York to Francella Anderson Smith and Arthur Smith. She spent her early childhood living in Jamaica, Queens and later moved to Kingston, New York, where she was raised by her mother and grandmother. Janet graduated from Kingston High School in 1953. Janet began working immediately out of high school for New York Telephone Company as an operator. In early 1960 she moved back to Queens for a new opportunity at New York Telephone in Manhattan. In search of friends, Janet attended a young people’s fellowship function at St. Lukes Lutheran Church, Woodhaven. At that very first meeting, she met the love of her life, Walter Postel. He walked her home that night, and, basically, never left her side since then. Janet and Walter were married on December 27, 1960 – just 10 months after meeting! Janet and Walter resided in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and had two children, Eric and Nancy. A few weeks after Nancy’s birth in 1969, they moved to their current home in Montrose, New York. Janet was heavily involved in local volunteer and social groups – Newcomers, PTA, bowling, and Croton Home Crafters. She learned to play bridge when she moved to Montrose and joined a Croton bridge group, of which she played in even through this year. In 1978, Janet decided it was time to go back to work and she resumed her employment with New York Telephone Company, as a Customer Service Representative. After 19 more years of employment there, she retired from Verizon in 1997. She then returned to her volunteering. She became one of the “pink ladies” that you would see at Phelps Memorial Hospital gift shop for 18 years. She also volunteered for the Telephone Company Pioneers Retiree club and with them sewed and delivered heart pillows for cardiac patients at Westchester Medical Center. She managed all memorial donation correspondence for her beloved Emanuel Lutheran Church and volunteered for The Historic Hudson Valley.
Janet was passionate and adventurous. She traveled many parts of the world with Walter and her children and grandchildren. Her absolute favorite trip was a Grand Canyon Colorado River Rafting trip she took with Walter in 1992, which included sleeping under the stars and rafting through white water. She belonged to multiple bridge groups and enjoyed playing all kinds of card games and board games with family and friends. She worked on daily crossword puzzles and loved to put together a jigsaw puzzle as well. She loved theatre, concerts, cooking, and being with friends. Most important to Janet, always, was her family. She cherished every moment spent with Walter, Eric, Nancy, son-in-law Michael, and her beloved grandchildren Ryan, Nicholas and Abigail.
Janet was predeceased by her parents, Francella Anderson Smith and Arthur L. Smith. She is survived by her husband, Walter Postel, son, Eric Postel, daughter, Nancy Postel Lustyik (Michael), grandchildren Ryan, Nicholas, and Abigail, and multiple cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Janet to Emanuel Lutheran Church, 197 Manville Road, Pleasantville, NY 10570 or to Friends of Karen, 118 Titicus Road, North Salem, NY 10560.
