Obituary for Albion J. "Al" Fitzgerald

Albion James Fitzgerald Jr. died peacefully at his home in White Plains on January 29th, 2018, at the age of 82. Born and raised on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with his six siblings, he often stressed, “You can take the boy out of the city, but you can never take the city out of the boy.”
A graduate of Xavier High School and Fordham University, Al captained Cross Country teams at both schools. Afterward he proudly served as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps, and was stationed on the island of Okinawa with the 3rd Marine Division. Honorably discharged with the rank of captain, his bond to the USMC never diminished.
Al spent 26 years as an administrator at Montefiore Medical Center, and his career culminated as Vice President at several hospitals in the Bronx and Westchester.
From a young age, he enjoyed spending summers lakeside in the Adirondacks. Having developed a passion for gardening, Al often gifted plants to family and friends. A devout Catholic, his philanthropy benefited indigenous children and environmental conservation.
Preceded by his son Philip, Albion is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carmela, two sons Albion James III and Timothy Patrick, and six grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows R.C. Church, 920 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains on Saturday, February 3rd at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Siena House (www.sienahouseshelter.org).
Obscure-history buff and always an eager storyteller, Al’s stories and wisdom live on in the memories of all who knew him.
