Obituary for Joanne S. Procell

Joanne Stuffo Procell, 82, of Hartsdale passed away peacefully on April 11th, after a long and courageous fight with heart and lung disease, which never stood in her way. Born in Philadelphia in 1935 to immigrant parents Angelo and Mary (Ciccanti) Stuffo, Joanne’s life focused around the piano from the age of 4. Studying under Madame Genia Robinor she quickly became a virtuoso and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1957, followed by a master’s degree from Harvard (Radcliffe) and doctoral work at Brandeis University. It was in Boston that she met her husband of 58 years, Charles Procell, who survives her along with children Cassandra (Martin) West of Hudson Falls, NY, Vernon (Paula) Procell of San Diego, CA, and Adam (Benedicte) Procell of Pleasantville, NY. She put aside her piano to raise her children to whom she was a loving and caring mother, a job she never retired from. Returning to the arts in the 1980’s Joanne was a piano teacher and prolific accompanist to musicians around Westchester and at Hoff-Barthelson Music School in Scarsdale. She touched the lives of tens of thousands of children over four decades of selfless dedication to music education, never hesitating to do whatever was in the best interest of the student, working seven days a week, through serious illness, until she entered the hospital 10 weeks ago. Joanne is also survived by her adored grandchildren Ashley (Garrett) Foy Bishop, Alyssa (Justin Lemery) West, Alexander West, Margaux Procell and Louise Procell, as well as five great-grandchildren; her dear sister Barbara Roccia whom she adored, along with nephews, nieces and many cousins. Joanne is also survived by several “adopted” children and their families which she always loved as her own. The family will receive friends at Beecher Flooks Funeral Home in Pleasantville, New York on Saturday April 14 from 2-5 PM. A Memorial Service will be held at Hoff-Barthelson Music School, 25 School Lane, Scarsdale, New York on Sunday April 15 from 1-5 PM.
