Msgr. Thomas E.  Gilleece
Reverend Monsignor Thomas E. Gilleece, pastor of the Roman Catholic Church of St. John and St. Mary, Chappaqua, passed into eternal life on Friday evening, June 15, 2018 at White Plains hospital. Father was 76. Thomas E. Gilleece was born on August 21, 1941 in Bronx NY to Mary and Michael Gilleece. In 1963, Father Gilleece earned his Bachelor’s Degree; in 1966 his Masters of Theology: in 1967 his Maters of Divinity all at St. Josephs College and Seminary Dunwoodie in Yonkers NY. He was ordained to the Roman Catholic Priesthood May 27, 1967 in the Archdiocese of New York.
Msgr. Gilleece would go on to serve the Archdiocese for the next 51 years.
His first assignment was at Immaculate Conception Church in NY, NY. as Parochial Associate. Three years later in 1970 Msgr. Gilleece became a faculty member of Cardinal Spellman High School. During Father’s seven years there, he made a lasting impression on his students, many of which kept in close contact with him all these years. In 1977 earned his third master’s Degree in Religious Education from Fordham University and became the Associate Vicar of Education for the Archdiocese of New York.
Msgr. Gilleece was named pastor of St. Paul in Congers NY in January of 1990.
He served there until July 1, 2001 when he became the Chancellor of the Archdiocese of New York. In 2002, Msgr. Gilleece was given an Honorary Doctorate from St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY. Msgr. Gilleece ‘s service to the Archdiocese of New York and the people of God included a number of distinguished boards, commissions and professional associations; Inter-Parish Finance Board, Board of Trustees of Catholic Charities, Board of Trustees for Providence Rest, College of Consulters for the Archdiocese of New York, Archdiocesan Priests Personnel Board, Archdiocesan Ecumenical Commission, Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission, Prestybrial Council, Chancellor of the Equestrian Order of Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta, Pierre Toussaint Residence, Chief Administrator of Catholic Education, Chaplin for the Valley Cottage, Congers and Chappaqua Fire Departments and a member of the Chappaqua Interfaith Community. The people of St. John and St. Mary welcomed our beloved pastor, Rev. Msrg. Thomas E. Gilleece on July 1, 2007. Msgr, Gilleece served the parish community with humility, compassion, humor and great love. Msgr. Thomas E. Gilleece was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Michael Gilleece, his brother, the Rev. Michael Gilleece and his sister Patricia Myron. He is survived by his siblings; Winnie Jaeger, James Gilleece, Kevin Gilleece, Eileen Prisinzano, 7nieces, 8 nephews and 34 grand-nieces and nephews. The wake and Masses will be held at the Church of St. John and St. Mary, 30 Poillon Drive, Chappaqua, NY 10514. Wake: Thursday, June 21, 2018 from 2:00 – 6:00 PM. Followed by the Mass of the Holy Eucharist celebrated at 7:30 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 22, 2018 at 10:00 AM. The burial will be at Gethsemane Cemetery in Congers, NY. 10920.
