Father Daniel Davies, O.P., died in the early morning of August 2, 2018, at Cabrini of Westchester in Dobbs Ferry, NY, at the age of 90. Fr. Davies served as a priest for over sixty years in numerous parishes, including ministry as pastor of St. Mary Parish in Johnson City, TN, St. Joseph Parish in Ponchatoula, LA, and Holy Rosary Parish in Hawthorne, NY. He is survived by his sisters, Sr. Mary Elizabeth Davies, S.C., Lilllian Davies Bird, and Ruth Ann Davies Foley, along with many nephews and nieces.

Father Davies was born on May 1, 1928, in Jersey City, NJ, to Daniel Joseph and Lillian Gertrude (née Metzler) Davies, and named Daniel Joseph after his father. He attended Sacred Heart School, St. Peter’s Preparatory Academy, and Dickenson Accredited Evening High School all in Jersey City, NJ. On February 2, 1946, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was discharged on December 24, 1947, after serving on the USS Portsmouth and the USS Fargo. After his discharge, he returned to Jersey City and completed high school while working for Western Electric Co., graduating from Dickenson Accredited. In 1950, he was accepted as a preparatory student for the priesthood in the Dominican Order at Guzman Hall, Providence College, Providence, RI.

He entered the Dominican Novitiate in 1951, at St. Stephen Priory in Dover, MA, and received the religious name Thaddeus. He made his first profession at St. Stephen Priory on August 26, 1952, and his solemn profession at Precious Blood Church in Monmouth Beach, NJ on August 26, 1955. He studied philosophy at St. Rose Priory in Springfield, KY, and at St. Joseph Priory in Somerset, OH. He studied theology at the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. On June 5, 1958, he was ordained a priest at St. Dominic Church in Washington, DC, by Amleto Cardinal Cicognani, Apostolic Delegate to the United States.

In 1959, Fr. Davies was assigned to St. Mary’s in Johnson City, TN, where he served as a parochial vicar. In 1963, he was assigned to St. Vincent Ferrer in Madison Heights, MI, where he served as a parochial vicar. In 1969, he was assigned to Sacred Heart Priory in Jersey City, NJ, where he served as a parochial vicar and subprior. In 1972, he was assigned back to St. Mary’s in Johnson City and served as pastor and superior of St. Mary’s for six years. After completing two terms as superior, he attended the Vatican II Institute in Menlo Park, CA, in 1979.

He became part of the Province of St. Martin de Porres when it formed in 1979, and was assigned to St. Dominic Priory in New Orleans, LA, where he served as a parochial vicar. In 1982, he was appoint pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Ponchatoula, LA, and served there for six years. In 1988, after completing his time as pastor, he took a sabbatical enrolling in an evangelization course at Steubenville University.

In 1989, Fr. Davies transfiliated back to the Province of St. Joseph and was assigned to Holy Rosary Rectory in Hawthorne, NY, where he served as a parochial vicar. In 1990, he was appoint pastor and superior of Holy Rosary. In 1996, he was assigned to Holy Innocents Rectory where he served as parochial vicar. In 1997, he took a sabbatical enrolling in a program at Blessing Place in Lacombe, LA. In 1998, he was assigned to St. Vincent Ferrer Priory in New York City. In 2000, he was assigned to Holy Innocents Rectory where he continued his pastoral work for 17 years. In 2017, he moved to Cabrini of Westchester in Dobbs Ferry, NY, to better provide for his health needs.

Fr. Davies’s body was received at Holy Innocents Parish in Pleasantville, NY, on August 8, 2017. The Office of the Dead was celebrated that evening at 7:00 pm. Very Rev. Darren Pierre, O.P., Socius, was the principal celebrant at the Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:00 am the next day at Holy Innocents Church. Rev. Gregory Doherty, O.P., was the preacher. Interment followed at All Souls Cemetery, Pleasantville, NY.
