Obituary for Barbara Ann Stanton (Knecht)

Print
Barbara Ann Stanton, 86, (nee Knecht) passed into her eternal reward surrounded by her loving husband, Frank, and son, Mark. She died in Naples, Florida, where she enjoyed a lovely retirement and made many lifelong friends

The matriarch of a large family, Barbara was born and raised in Merchantville, New Jersey. She was the third of four children of Charles and Barbara Knecht. Growing up during the Great Depression, Barbara developed close and lasting bonds with her immediate and extended family. She was a dedicated learner, achieving multiple college degrees with honors from Immaculata University in 1953. Barbara was a devout Catholic her entire life, and found great comfort and solace in her faith. She was particularly devoted to St. Therese of Lisieux ("The Little Flower") and to the Infant Jesus of Prague.

While Barbara was a strong, independent woman in her own right, the greatest part of her life was devoted to her 65-year marriage to Francis Xavier Stanton. Her brother Bill introduced her to Frank when they rowed together and won the US-Canadian School-boy championships for LaSalle High, as well as a number of national titles for Vesper Boat Club. They married in June of 1953. Their union produced five sons, four of whom were born within a five-year span. As a busy wife and mother, Barbara had more than a full plate, but she always made time for others. After her boys were grown, she became a trained counselor for the National Council on Alcoholism where she shared her experience, strength, and hope to help those suffering from alcoholism and addiction.

Barbara was a fixture in the Chappaqua, NY, community. She was an active member at the St. John and Mary Parish; volunteered with Twigs of Northern Westchester Hospital; and worked as a librarian at Horace Greeley High School where she kept a watchful eye on her sons and their friends. Barbara was a passionate golfer who formed "The Barb's" - a group of members named Barbara who held an annual charity golf event. She was also a talented painter, a hobby she shared with her late sister-in-law, Florann Knecht. She loved to read, particularly Robert Ludlum spy thrillers, and enjoyed the company of many family pets during her lifetime.

Barbara's greatest joy in life was her family. When her son, Charlie, was injured in a skiing accident, she dedicated herself to caring for him for the remaining four years of his life. After moving to Florida in retirement, she devoted herself to building friendships, and hosting family and friends from "up North." The quality of Barbara's life in Florida was preserved in large part due to the tireless efforts of her caretaker and friend, Lourdes Carvajal and her husband, Jorge. The family extends their deepest gratitude for their help.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Frank Stanton; her sons Skip Stanton, Mark Stanton (Ann), Paul Stanton and Brian Stanton (Nicole); her daughter-in-law, Debbie; her sister, Kathi Mayfield; and nine grandchildren. She was predeceased by her beloved son, Charlie in 1992. She will be laid to rest next to her son in the Gate of Heaven cemetery in Hawthorne, NY.
