Obituary for Eleanor F. Wedge

Eleanor Frances Wedge, for many years a freelance book and manuscript editor for New York publishing houses, died on February 26, 2019. She was 93 years old. Eleanor is survived by a brother, Nicholas; two nieces, Catherine Miranker and Elizabeth Wedge Clary; and a nephew William, as well as three great nieces. Born in Manhattan, Eleanor was the daughter of Will Wedge, a New York Sun sportswriter, and Sonia Rosoff Wedge, a reference librarian at the Bronx Botanical Garden. With degrees from Hunter College, Smith College, and the School of Library Science of Columbia University, Eleanor worked at the Brooklyn Museum in the Egyptology Department and at the Indiana University Library before becoming an editor. An avid bird watcher, aficionado of New York history, a bibliophile, and a lover of wordplay, she was particularly devoted to Scottish literature and lore. Eleanor lived in Brooklyn Heights for more than 50 years and was predeceased by her partner Susan Lutes. She attended Grace Episcopal Church in Brooklyn. Eleanor will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Donations honoring her memory can be made to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, 159 Sapsucker Woods Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850.
