Some years ago I was competing against Alec in The Club Championship at MKCC. Alec and I had payed a fair amount together and it was always a relaxed causual atmosphere but this time I could tell it was different. Alec was playing well and clearly wanted to win. We went toe to toe in a hard fought match and in the end Alec sunk a difficult putt and claimed victory. Normally when beaten I get a sunken or empty feeling for a while. But this particular time my emotion was different. While obviously Alec was well pleased with his performance, on that last green when he placed his large arm around me and gave me that big cheesy grin of his, I was so happy for him. Happy to get beat; I can't ever remeber feeling that way before or since. You see when in the company of Alec Newi, no matter what the outcome of business, you just can't lose with Alec.
