Obituary for David V. Almeida Sr.

David Valente Almeida, Sr. died on August 26, 2015 from natural causes at the age of 88. He was born in Pardilho, Portugal on November 26, 1926 and was raised and lived in Yonkers, New York. He served in the Merchant Marines during
World War II. He married Emilia Ferreira on November 28, 1948. They had a rewarding life together, revolving around five children, David, Donald, Douglas, Daniel, and Deborah; seventeen grandchildren, Danielle, David, Gillian, Gabriella, Matthew, Chris, Shaun, Doug, Nick, Dana, Alyssa, Victoria, Alexandra, Daniel, Christina, Maria, and Anthony; and six great grandchildren, who all called him Poppy. Throughout his life he enjoyed time with his family, particularly boating, family gatherings, travel, and the thirty years the family spent at the beach in Rhode Island. Throughout his life he was also very involved with the Boy Scouts and with the Portuguese Community in Yonkers where he was a member of the Portuguese American Community Center for over sixty years, including serving as its President. He worked over most of his life in the construction industry and was president of Avante Construction. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed. The family will receive friends on Sunday August 30 at the Beecher Flooks Funeral Home in Pleasantville from 2 – 4 & 7 – 9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10 AM at St. Theresa’s R.C. Church in Briarcliff Manor. Entombment to follow at Ferncliff Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers kindly make donations to Making Headway at makingheadway.org or to the Boy Scouts of America Westchester & Putnam Council.
