Obituary for Thomas C. Porter

Thomas C. Porter
Thomas was born in Northern Westchester Hospital on November 7, 1988. He attended Westorchard Elementary School and then Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, New York and graduated with a Regents diploma in 2007. At Greeley he was a member of the varsity golf team and was also the recipient of the award for Strength in the Face of Adversity. He went on to attend college and later worked for Access Nursing. Thomas volunteered for FACES (Finding A Cure for Epilepsy and Seizures) and for the Westchester Golf Association. He was a member of both Quail Ridge and Sleepy Hollow Country Clubs. A devout Catholic, Thomas was a parishioner at the Church of Saint John and Saint Mary in Chappaqua, New York.
A genuinely happy guy Thomas Clifford Porter, born on November 7, 1988 was a strong, handsome and loving son and brother. The very definition of an optimist, he only saw the best in life, in others and in himself. His grateful and positive attitude earned him a special place in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
Thomas had many interests, the most obvious of which were sports and music, but his first priority was his family. He and his beloved sister Kelly grew up in Chappaqua, New York and were raised with utmost care by their parents Tom and the late Susan Porter. He had a unique and powerful bond with both parents who often experienced the mischievous side of his signature smile. He had a sly wit and would be the first to volunteer a good story about times he caused a bit of trouble.
Thomas was part of a small, close-knit family. He adored his sister Kelly, new brother-in-law AJ, his cousins Elizabeth and Catherine, and his late grandparents Cliff and Virginia Porter and Frank and Eleanor Troy. He chatted frequently with his Great Aunt Elizabeth and enjoyed talking sports with Aunt Mary and Uncle Kurt. Thomas always enjoyed spending time with his Aunt Janet and Uncle Kevin, as well as so many close family friends. These visits often involved trips to the movies, helping both parties develop a mutual interest (or tolerance) for blockbuster comedies.
Thomas was a man of many passions, and nowhere was this more evident than through his love of sports. He was an avid golfer and played frequently at his home courses, Sleepy Hollow and Quail Ridge. As a child you could find him hitting a winning forehand on the tennis court or rounding the Little League bases. He was a whiz when it came to his favorite teams, the Rangers and the Yankees. He didn't prefer scholarly pursuits but if there was a stat, player, or fantasy league, Thomas was a dedicated student.
Thomas was also a first-rate fisherman, a skill he undoubtedly picked up from his father. It was a hobby they shared from the moment he was able to actually throw a line at five years old. He was no stranger to surf casting and the seals who frequented the popular fishing spots off the coast of Nantucket, one of his favorite places to visit with his family (in spite of the fact that it is located in the heart of Red Sox territory).
It is no surprise that people gravitated toward Thomas. He had a super human ability to muster strength and humor in the face of his challenges, and a smile to carry him through it. A guy filled with immeasurable love, he always greeted his friends with an oversized hug and true delight at seeing them. Those who knew him were touched by his spirit. With his ever present smile, Thomas showed us all how to be appreciative and to make the most of every moment of life.
