Obituary for George L. Wachtell

George Lowell Wachtell died yesterday peacefully in his home. A 56 year resident of Pleasantville NY, Mr. Wachtell was in his 87th year. Mr. Wachtell is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Joy Ann, as well as five children, Douglas and wife Angela of Fresno CA., Karen Wachtell Donnell of Hartford CT, Patricia and husband Ridgway Knight of Santa Monica CA, Theodore Wachtell II of Long Valley NJ and Robert Wachtell of Weston CT, and by 8 grandchildren, Michael and Sean Donnell; George, Ridgway and Ethan Knight; and Theodore III, William and Catherine Wachtell.

Mr. Wachtell grew up in Crestwood, as one of 7 children of the late Theodore and Caroline Wachtell and has therefor effectively been a Westchester County resident his entire life. He is survived by brothers Thomas of Ojai CA, William “Bruce” of Stintson Beach CA, and Paul of Copenhagen , Denmark and by his sister Juliette Wachtell Eiger of Scarsdale NY. He is predeceased by two brothers, Richard Wachtell formerly of Tuxedo Park NY, and Richard Edgar formerly of White Plains NY.

After graduating from the Choate School in Wallingford CT in 1947, Mr. Wachtell attended Westminster College in Fulton Missouri and graduated in 1951. It was in Fulton that he met the love of his life, Joy Ann, who attended William Woods College, also in Fulton. The couple married in October 1954. After serving in the US Military Counter Intelligence Corp for two years, the couple ultimately settled back in Westchester County NY where Mr. Wachtell went to work for Livingston Wachtell & Co. , an Accounting and Tax Advisory firm founded by the late Theodore Wachtell in 1919.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 18 at 11am at the Pleasantville Presbyterian Church (400 Bedford Rd, Pleasantville). In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Columbia University Taub’s Institute in support of Dr. James Noble’s Alzheimer’s research (Contact Matt Reals at 212-304-7203).
